Today we went to Fairlie to see the unveiling of their latest sculpture. It has been 100 years since the start of WW1 and the town commemorated it by commissioning a sculpture by (the one and only) Donald Paterson. For a small town they put on a great event. Very moving, and a great tribute to those who fell. The Sculpture depicts a soldier waiting for the train to take him to war. He is standing on the original site where the train station was. |

The statue shows such a shocking depiction of the personal equipment worn by a NZMR trooper in 1914. The bandolier equipment is completely wrong!
